This organization has a special place in our hearts and is one we have had the privilege of watching it expand over the years. It helped grow our friendship as it allowed us to enjoy our favorite place, the beach, with so many less barriers!
This non-profit organization, founded by two mothers of children with exceptional needs, works to create day trip and vacation opportunities without barriers. Here on Cape Cod, SMILE Mass has donated accessible beach wheelchairs to many beaches. A complete list of beaches equipped with the chairs can be found here. The program has now even expanded to other surrounding states!
The beach chairs are designed with an agility for maneuvering through the sand. They also have comfortable adjustable straps for extra support. Our favorite part was that you could wheel straight into the water as they even FLOAT!
Equally impressive is their equipment loaner program which allows families to borrow adaptive equipment FREE of charge. Such as the floating beach wheelchairs, adaptable bikes, and jogging strollers.
Currently the organization is embarking on their biggest project yet; buying a property here on the Cape. This fully handicapped accessible vacation rental will allow families the access to life long memories on vacation, despite disability.
This organization is truly something to smile about!
