Got Access? Spaulding Adaptive Sports Centers Does!

There is much deserved hype about the beautiful beaches on Cape Cod however it is easy to forget about the other natural wonders here on Cape such as Nickerson State Park. Visiting a heavily wooded off the beaten path state park might sound daunting if you have limited mobility or rely on wheels to get around. But Spaulding Adaptive Sports Centers breaks these barriers with their incredible adaptive sports programs.

What makes this program so unique is the qualified staff members help each participant find the most appropriate activities for his or her interests, capabilities and needs. Staff is made up of outstanding adaptive sports professionals and Spaulding therapists who provide the perfect environment to try a new sport or get back to one you have always loved.  Programs are open to individuals of any age in the community who are living with disabilities.

Located in Brewster is the new McGraw Center for Adaptive Sports at Nickerson State Park. This exceptional center was created through collaboration of Spaulding Rehab and the Department of Conservation and Recreation.  What’s better than access for all into the wilderness and water through adaptive sports?! A variety of adaptive programs are offered here on Cape such as kayaking, archery, biking, golfing, yoga, and therapeutic drumming. Whether you are a local looking to get more involved in the community or eager for an outdoorsy adventure while on vacation the McGraw Center is where its at! The Cape Cod Rail Trail, beach access to Cape Cod Bay, hiking trails, accessible yurts for camping (how cool?!), and more will be available to participants and families at the park.

We had the opportunity to participate in the adaptive kayaking program on Cliff Pond and we are eager to get back! Before even arriving we had a nice phone call with a staff member who asked all the right questions about our needs and which adaptions and accommodations would be best for us. From how we communicate, to which devices to use for transfers, to personal preferences on which equipment to use while on the water she covered it all! We headed into the park feeling comfortable and knowing our needs would be met leaving only enjoying the scenery and experience up to us 🙂

On site they have a variety of equipment such as grips for holding paddles, supports to guide the paddling motion, supportive seating, and even comfortable padding to insert into the kayak. We even had the privilege to kayak alongside a 91 year old grandmother who was living life to the fullest out on the pond with the support the incredible program!

The whole afternoon was relaxed and serene on the pond. Thanks to Terry, Keja, Nicole, and Kyle our attentive staff for the day we left feeling rejuvenated and eager to come back again.
