Sail Cape Cod

When I heard about an adaptive sailing program on Cape I knew we had to get our name on the list quick! We were so lucky to grab the last two slots left. We had heard about this program, Sail Cape Cod, in Hyannis and had high expectations. And let us tell you- this program far exceeded our already high hopes!

Being out on the water is the quintessential Cape Cod experience. However such an activity often times has barriers for those with exceptional needs. But Sail Cape Cod breaks these barriers down with two beautiful state of the art sail boats equipped with a variety of accessible equipment. This program provides the option to embark on a one time sail or sign up for a package of five lessons. Sessions go out twice a day: 9:00 am-11:00 or 1:00 pm- 3:00 pm. There are three different seating options which provide a range of supports for varying needs. A slide board makes it possible for individuals, who might not otherwise be able, to sail the boat independently. We used the most supportive seating arrangement for safety which is secured in the middle of the boat.

When we first arrived we were greeted with the friendly faces of instructors Kelsey and Margaret. Not only were they extremely competent sailors but they were personable and truly contributed to making the program what it is. Kelsey, a Physical Therapist, maneuvered the Hoyer lift with such care for each movement and detail to make Caroline most comfortable. Margaret, a recent graduate of a teaching degree, was able to connect with each of us from the start. We jammed to Taylor Swift and had a blast while out on Lewis Bay. Our second day on the water was just as great- another sunny morning- and we also got to sail with one of the best junior instructors, Lilly.

What amazes me about this program is how smoothly it all runs- from the prompt email responses, the proximity of parking spots to the accessible dock, and the exceptional staff who cater each sail to your specific needs. The program is fully funded through generous donors and grants, allowing participants to sail at no cost, as well as paying the well deserving staff members. This will definitely be on our list of repeats and we can’t wait to see how this organization grows in the coming years. Whether you are looking for a leisurely sail or hoping to get into the sport of sailing this program does not disappoint!
